World Affairs Colloquium

The World Affairs Colloquium (WAC) is produced bi-weekly by the Trent International Program and the Trent International Student Association (TISA). As a committee, we bring in speakers who facilitate a discussion around a current international issue.
"Colloquium" as define by WordNet Web, Princeton University: an academic meeting or seminar usually led by a different lecturer and on a different topic at each meeting.
This past academic year (2009-2010), our committee organized over ten colloquiums.

Below is a sample of two WACs that we organized.

1) "Making a Difference in Haiti: Longterm development and Human Rights"

Guest speakers:

*Professor Haroon Akram-Lodhi, Chair and Professor at the International Development Studies Department
*Anthony Anirud, LLM, Human Rights Advisor and Educator

Both guest speakers will provide an expert perspective on two critical aspects that entangle Haiti. Both topics are important to consider when thinking about what can be done in response to the earthquake and in the longer term recovery.

2) "El Salvador" Exposing Canadians to Conflict and Development"

Movie and discussion facilitated by Professor Emeritus David Morrison. David Morrison has served in a variety of teaching and administrative leadership roles in the University. The video "Horizons in El Salvador" documents the experience of a group of Canadians, including him, who participated in an educational field trip to El Salvador. It highlights the reflections on the civil war (1980-92) and how that experience continues to shape and scar contemporary development.
