Environmentalists have for years warned us about the dangers of off-shore drilling. Pro-drilling advocates have dismissed the commments of the environmentalists (and others who don't support drilling) as ill-informed and non-sensical rubbish. Time and time again, history has shown that we need something truly catastrophic to shake us into reality... a reality that helps us understand our undue extravagance and voracious desire to consume more and more.
It's time (way over time if you ask me) to start thinking about very very stringent regulation and using energy sources that are more renewable, safer and less ominous to the earth's well-being. We have the technology (wind and bio-fuels, for example) but we do not have the critical human desire: the will and commitment.
I can't say anything else that hasn't already been said, except that this disaster will provide other oil companies ample opportunity to make themselves look good. We all know oil drilling is bad, but if you're not BP, you at least look slightly less evil to the world. Let the campaigns fly.
